We need time to focus on ourselves. With our busy lives and technology at our fingertips, we can tend to feel like we're always "on". And we know that always being "on" creates stress. Stress can be productive and helpful to us in short bursts, but is damaging to our health when it's constant and unrelenting.
When was the last time you truly unplugged, slowed down and allowed time for yourself? Time to relax and reflect on your life: where you've been and where you're heading; how you are feeling in that journey. Is it fulfilling? Is it what you want it to be?
When have you actually spent time cultivating your power to flourish?
The concept of Human Flourishing was introduced by Martin Seligman, widely considered to be the Founder of Positive Psychology. He defines flourishing as a state of psychological well-being and happiness that allows people to live a life of meaning and fulfillment. Seligman defines flourishing by the five pillars of his PERMA model: Positivity, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Achievement.
In future posts, we will break down PERMA and talk more specifically about the power of each pillar, but for now, I want to focus on one aspect of PERMA that is critical- your ability to take time to self-reflect and really think about each of these pillars in your life. When was the last time you stopped what you were doing and asked yourself: Am I flourishing?
Flourishing doesn't occur in a vacuum. It can't be done in isolation. Relationships and support are vital to human flourishing. Humans are wired for connection with others. Have you ever talked with anyone about your ability to flourish? Friends and family are vital here, but there is also another person who can help you flourish.
A coach can help. In fact, it's their singular goal. You. You are a coach's priority. Imagine that? There is someone out there who is completely and entirely focused on your ability to thrive in this world.
Quite simply, a coach is someone who is focused entirely on your dreams, goals, success, challenges. Your ability to flourish is their priority. And here's the thing about a coach: it's all about you.
Coaches hold their clients in unconditional, positive regard and without judgment. They strive to approach all conversations from this perspective. They also serve as your ally. They aim to be completely present with you, open and accepting of your story. They recognize your wisdom; that you are the expert in your life. They believe deeply that you are capable of the change you want to accomplish. Their primary purpose is to support you in achieving what matters most to you. They meet you where you are and help you get where you want to be.
Coaches come from all walks of life- they can be family, friends, and mentors; but, they can also be professionals- health coaches, executive coaches, life coaches, therapists, religious leaders, etc.. Coaches can help in many different areas of your life.
Your health is a critical part of flourishing. The time we have on this earth is precious. Focusing on your Health PERMA is vital: the positive aspects of your health, engaging in improving and maintaining your health, strong relationships with people who prioritize your health, finding meaning in your health journey and achieving the health that you desire. This experience is critical to your overall well-being.
Going to the doctor is essential, but in the healthcare landscape today, let's be real. A doctor doesn't have the time to help you develop your Health PERMA. He or she may make important recommendations for you to eat better, move more or lose weight. And here's the thing: they're probably not telling you anything you didn't already know. But how do go from knowing to actually doing? That's a lot harder. There are deeply engrained habits that factor into these areas, there are beliefs you hold deeply, there are limitations that you feel. But a coach can help you discover your own path through these things. A path leading to your ability to flourish.
Find a health coach. Indulge in your health. You deserve the time and space for building your best health. Health coaching is, indeed, the new "me time".
